Dancing With the Stars is down to the final four dancers! Of the finalists, CosmoGirl has a clear favorite—Disney Channel star Chelsea Kane! Like other Disney faves, Kyle Massey and Cody Linley, Chelsea’s made an impression on the DWTS audience, even amongst the throngs of other big-name stars! CosmoGirl caught up with Chelsea to talk about her feelings about the semi-finals, what gets her pumped for a performance, and the best advice she’s gotten from her dance partner, Mark!
CosmoGirl: It’s so close to the end of Dancing With the Stars—how are you feeling right now?
Chelsea Kane: I am thrilled to be a part of the semi-finals—I’m over the moon! When I first signed on for the show, my biggest fear was being sent home early because no one knew who I was. I was aware that with Dancing…, there’s probably a large part of the viewing audience that hasn’t tuned into [Jonas L.A.] or heard of me at all. I was really afraid I was going to be sent home early without really getting the chance to dance or have anyone get to know my personality. [Now,] I’m thrilled!
CG: Are you nervous? Or are you riding the adrenaline high?
CK: I’m definitely riding on the adrenaline high, but I’m always nervous—especially now, because we have more dances than ever. We’re learning three dances a week and it’s at a time when you’re emotionally and physically drained. It’s a huge undertaking, and you’re nervous every week about whether you’re going to pull it off or not, and you want to pull it off.
CG: What do you do to get yourself pumped or excited before you hit the stage?
CK: Before I go out into the studio, I’m usually in my trailer blasting music. Before I head to the stage, I call my mom, and she wishes me luck and the rest of it is just about staying relaxed and as calm as possible. Having that moment, before I perform, with Mark [Ballas, DWTS partner], of just, “I love you, and I’ll do the best I can. If I mess up, I’m sorry.” Then we get out there!
CG: What’s the best advice Mark’s given you?
CK: I think, selling it. Usually Mark’s biggest notes on the night are, “Smile more!”, “Bigger facial expressions!”, “More energy!” And I think he’s totally right—it is the best advice. We spend 10 hours a day rehearsing to get the number as perfect as it can possibly be come Monday night. Once we’re out on that stage, thinking about whether my shoulder’s just perfect, or whether my arms are in the perfect position, it really just has to go out the window. All of those little details kind of fog up living in the moment, and just enjoying it and selling it. That’s his best advice. He lets me get out there and entertain and it seems to pay off.
Tune in on Monday night to catch Chelsea in the semi-finals! Who do you think will win DWTS?
